Online School Offers Scholarships for Soldiers

The online Western Governors University has developed a new form of financial assistance to help soldiers wanting to complete higher education degrees. Scholarships amounting up to $1,500 are available through WGU to reservists and active National Guard members. The school offers both bachelor and master degrees in fields like IT, education, health care and business. The convenience of an online school can actually enable active-duty military personnel to work toward a degree because the work can be completed at any time and place where Internet access is available.

Tuition for most WGU programs falls below $5,800 per year. Reservist and National Guard Scholarship recipients can earn $300 toward each half-year term, for up to five terms. Although the scholarship is highly competitive, several winners will be selected to receive scholarships, based on their academic history, competency, and their readiness to begin an online education program. Members of the reserves and National Guard are eligible to apply for financial assistance.

WGU students must be able to submit documentation verifying their "status as a current member of the Reserves or National Guard" from an education office in order to apply for a scholarship. They must also acquire a letter of recommendation which speaks toward the value of their military contributions.

Online school can make education possible for soldiers who are unable to attend a traditional ground school, due to their military status or other commitments related to a job or family. Online courses can be completed from any location with Internet access and according to a flexible time schedule.
