Online shopping in the digital age: High street shops under pressure

Mega Monday is the day of all days when online shopping goes big. It is in fact the busiest day for online shopping on record. With online shops springing up all over the place, we have every reason to believe that Mega Monday will apply not just to Christmas but our online spending habits in general.

The ecommerce industry was wowed by the online income generated in December 2009, but last year was the biggest and best yet. More than twice as successful as Christmas '09 and enough to put some of the smaller independent retail shops out of business; over 7,000 online shops that reported their most impressive sales to date took place on a single day over the festive period.

High street shops are feeling the spending backlash as our buying habits change over time. What was once an activity in the physical realm has transformed into a booming online market shopping in the digital age.

We have all the expected factors for such a transformation taking place, the efficiency (time and cost), the accessibility (the internet is open to all) and the fact we can shop online at our own leisure. On top of all this, any good ecommerce software system will allow you to set up your own online business for a reasonable monthly sum.

This has had an inevitable impact on smaller high street shops in particular how can they compete with the level of online spending we witness daily? So much so, those online shops on an ecommerce software platform with shopping cart function are high up in the ranks with big retail names such as John Lewis and Amazon, for instance. The closure of small, independent outlets is readily replaced with the abundance of online shops making their way into the ecommerce market.

December 2010 saw a heavy snowfall that forced the majority of us to take shelter indoors, hence turning to the internet in a last minute bid to buy presents. Shopping online is growing in popularity day by day, and it would seem that Christmas was just one part of the bigger spending picture.

And the best part of it? Anyone anywhere can build up an online shop with an ecommerce software package all for under 19.99 a month. Having seen the spike in online sales over Christmas, perhaps this is the way to go.
