Oracle and Fujitsu Continue Server Partnership
Oracle and Fujitsu Continue Server Partnership
In February 2011, Tech giants Oracle and Fujitsu announced the extension of their long-term collaboration in SPARC technology. The already over ten-year partnership promises to both improve performance and speed, while lowering costs for future UNIX servers.
SPARC, or Scalable Processor Architecture, was introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1987. SPARC is a microprocessor architecture that improves performance by reducing the number and complexity of instructions a processor has to perform. Additionally, its scalability means the same sets of instructions can be used at a variety of levels, from a small scale embedded processor system up to large scale server processors. Using SPARC assists multiple systems, from the smallest computer up to workstations and servers, to operate more efficiently. Today, SPARC is often found in hardware running UNIX and UNIX-based operating systems.
Oracle acquired the SPARC's creator, Sun Microsystems, in 2010. This purchase transformed Oracle from a software giant into a large scale software and hardware technology manufacturer. Fujitsu, a computer hardware and services company, had previously partnered with Sun Microsystems in developing SPARC systems. For instance, in 2007, Fujitsu and Sun Microsystems collaborated to create the mid- and high-end M-Series SPARC Enterprise servers. Even prior to the acquisition of Sun, Fujitsu had for many years also enjoyed a partnership with Oracle's software products. Upon Sun Microsystems' acquisition, the partnership was further solidified through an agreement to continue cooperating on future SPARC server systems.
For the future, Oracle and Fujitsu are predicting their collaboration will allow them within three short years to improve performance by 15 times over the current M-Series SPARC Enterprise servers. This deal also allows for merged sales teams to jointly sell the products, as well as an Oracle PartnerNetwork agreement that allows Fujitsu to sell and distribute other Oracle products.
About the partnership, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison stated, "Oracle's partnership with Fujitsu has never been stronger [...] We are entering a new phase with Fujitsu, aligning our engineering and worldwide distribution efforts with a focus on high-performance, highly reliable systems."
Fujitsu's president, Masami Yamamoto, said about the collaboration, "We believe our active partnership with Oracle, in addressing greater sales and services on a global scale, will produce a richer and more vibrant solution environment for our joint customers."
The new SPARC M-series servers will be branded with both Oracle and Fujitsu logos. To date, the newly branded servers are expected to be available for purchase sometime in 2012.
