Organic Clothing

If you've ever carefully perused the coffee isle or browsed for bananas at the supermarket

, you're probably already familiar with fair trade products. But do you know what fair trade really means? Fair trade labeling indicates when a product was produced under a set of principles that include fair labor practices and environmental regulations. By buying fair trade you are supporting independent producers, healthy working conditions, responsible methods of production and better environmental practices.

FAIR TRADE STANDARDS ARE PART OF INDIGENOUS' DNA:

We Provide fair wages in the local context

Support safe, healthy, and participatory workplaces

Supply financial and technical support as well as shared community planning to build capacity

Ensure environmental sustainability, (including using: Organic certified cotton, GOTS processing, and Oekotex 100 approved dyes)

Respect and embrace cultural identity, of families and community

Build direct and long-term relationships

Educate and collaborate with partners on sustainability

Use this handy infographic, provided by GOOD and Ben Jerry's, to find out more about what's behind fair trade products and how they can impact both producers and consumers.

Of course, it matters how fashion looks. Shouldn't it also matter how fashion is made? All Indigenous styles are made with organic cotton or free range Alpaca fiber. They are handmade by artisans being paid fair wages and whose cultural traditions are respected. Indigenous engages artisans as vital members of the team, we do all that we can to support economic growth in the developing world. We think that respect for artisans, respect for the environment, respect for culture and respect for community defines the way that all fashion should be made. What do you think?

While some fashion brands hide what goes on in their production process, INDIGENOUS invites customers to openly experience theirs.

INDIGENOUS' new Fair Trace Tool uses mobile-enabled web technology to let shoppers see where garments originate and how fibers were raised; to meet the artisans who hand-make them and to learn about INDIGENOUS' positive social impact. INDIGENOUSwill begin shipping its 2012 Fall line with a QR code on hang tags that connects to the garment origin traceability tool via any smart phone.

The Fair Trace Tool offers a brand video, artisan profiles, an origins geographical map and social impact data, including results of artisan workforce surveys.

INDIGENOUS is looking for other brands and partners to share this platform and technology with that are interested in elevating fair trade and organic standards.

Many of the hand-looming artisan work groups are based in the cities of Arequipa, Lima and Ayaviri. Each hand-looming work group is composed of 4 to 20 people, but could employ as many as 60 people depending on the number of machines in each work group and the timing of production. Conventional textile companies typically allocate only 50% to 60% of production costs to raw material and labor.Indigenouspartners allocate over 75% of the production costs to raw material and labor.

When not working for Indigenous, the artisans sell their products to local markets, including producing traditional attire and handicrafts.

We believe our fair trade production model is one of the most stable, equitable and profitable foreign trade models in existence. We are confident that for everyINDIGENOUSgarment purchased more money is going to directly support artisans than any other apparel company on the planet. And while many companies are moving into organic apparel, virtually none adheres to fair labor standards to the extent we do.
