For those of you who are new to internet marketing, I will briefly explain what it is and how you can capitalize on it. When someone goes to the search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing etc.) and searches for something, they are given a list of results. Most people will click on one of the results on the first page because it usually brings up the most relevant thing to their search. Also, it is just the easiest and quickest way to get what your looking for.

That is why as an online business, you want to ensure you are on or close to the first page when someone searches for something that is similar to your business.

To better understand SEO, you need to look at it like this. Google, Yahoo, Bing etc. want you to be using their search engines because the more people that use their service, the more money they make from advertisers. To do this, they want to make sure you are displayed the most relevant websites to your search inquiry to ensure you continue using their engine. If you did a search for "ipods" and the first page results were all car company websites, you would no longer want to use that search engine.

The search engines have programs that "crawl" every website on the internet to discover what they are about and decide how to place them in their results. When a search engine crawls your site, it is looking for a few different things. It wants to know how many and which websites have links that link to your website. It also wants to know what your website is about. It does this by scanning every piece of text on your site. If you have a paragraph that mentions "poodles" a bunch of times, the search engine will rank your site higher when someone searches poodles.

If you have plenty of quality websites about dogs linking to your website about poodles, you will most likely get ranked very high in the search results.

Some internet marketers will try and use this to their advantage by placing popular search words like "ipad" or "porn" into their website to try and get ranked higher and therefore get more traffic.

This sometimes does work but there is a huge problem with doing this. If you searched for "ipad" in Google and you clicked on the first result and it took you to a website on shoes, you would probably instantly click away. Not only does this frustrate consumers but it will leave them with a bad impression of your business and they probably wont come back to your site when they want to buy shoes.

When search engine optimizing your website, try to get a keyword density of 2.5-5 percent on a keyword that is highly relevant to your website. It is also a good idea to ask other sites in the same niche as you to post a link to your website and in return you will post a link to theirs.
