Organization Culture and Ecological Exploitation

There is a way that nature speaks, that land speaks

. Most of the time we are simply not patient enough, quiet enough, to pay attention to the story - LINDA HOGAN

Profit, productivity, growth, competitive edge, and market share- these words have taken a front seat in any business organization today. State of the art infrastructure, world-class furniture, and stylish interiors are becoming factors for attracting employees, clients and society as a whole. But what goes in the back stage is hard to believe but true, ironically. Industries are contaminating nature with pollutants and wastes at an almost immeasurable rate. One thing that perhaps most of the organizations have forgotten is that all this is done at the cost of misuse of Mother Nature. Although we see a bright picture of the world today, but if this trend of misuse of Mother Nature continues, even our existence can become a question mark tomorrow. This article sincerely attempts to throw some light on this dark side of the picture through following perspective:

1. Introduction to organizational culture

2. How organization can affect ecology

3. Loss to organizations

4. How can organizations contribute innovative ideas

5. Eco-friendly business model

Introduction to organizational culture : this section is introductory in nature and covers the basic concept of culture. The attempt is to clarify what all is covered under culture so that a logical link can be established between the factors of ecological exploitation and the reasons of how culture is responsible for it.

How organization can affect ecology: this section throws light on different activities done by organizations during their manufacturing and other functions, which directly or indirectly is a misuse of natural resources and is a source of contamination of our environment.

Loss to organizations: this misuse may appear to be a necessity for these organizations but it creates a lot of problems to the organizational functioning. The loss to the organization can be

a) Loss of health of the employees

b) Unhygienic working conditions

c) Extra maintenance required for tools and machines

d) Poor quality of finished goods

How can organizations contribute innovative ideas: in spite of some necessary requirements, if the corporate thinks creatively, there is a lot that can be contributed. The authors have taken some cases where the corporate have shown their environment friendliness and responsibility towards nature and ecology. The major cases taken are

a) Nestle

b) Nokia

c) Tata

Eco-friendly business model : what the mentioned companies are doing may not be a universal formula which fits in every organization. Therefore, it becomes important for us to understand the broad parameters which, if controlled and taken care of properly, can lead to building an attitude towards somewhat standardized approach towards sustainable development and thus enabling parallelism between high quality manufacturing and service on one hand and being responsible and true towards mother nature on the other. For this the authors propose an Eco-friendly business model, which tries to incorporate the intended philosophy.
