Sightseeing in New Orleans Vacations: St. Louis Cathedral
Located on Jackson Square is the magnificent St. Louis Cathedral, which is the most recognizable landmark in New Orleans. It is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in America, as it was constructed for the first time in 1718. Also called Basilica of St. Louise, King of France, the cathedral is a valuable part of the city and a historic attraction for everyone. In 1987, Pope John Paul II visited this cathedral, which also holds the bones of eight New Orleans bishops. Undergoing many catastrophes like fires, dynamite bombing, hurricane damage, etc. , the glorious church stands magnificently with three dramatic spires which point heavenward and bears a clock beneath its tallest spire. Inside, the interior is welcoming in its simplistic beauty with the front of the sanctuary having a gilded work entitled Sacrifice of the Lamb of God hangs over the altar and throughout the sanctuary statues of the saints peer down from their pedestals. Flags representing the countries once dominant in New Orleans hang high overhead. The life of St. Louis is depicted on the lower windows on both sides of the church. The cathedral is surreal because of its immense beauty.
