Otoplasty: What To Expect

The smallest abnormality in a person's body can often be the cause of much embarrassment and confidence issues

. In many cases these flaws do not even threaten the person's physical health, but do enough damage to the self esteem to warrant expensive cosmetic surgery. Deformed or protruding ears are not uncommon and can easily be corrected through a procedure known as otoplasty. Whether you suffer from a congenital defect or are simply sick of being called Dumbo, there are various cosmetic or reconstructive surgeries available to help you.

Ears stop growing at about 6 years of age, and usually by that point it will become apparent if there is a deformity or they start to look overly prominent. It is best to correct any defect at this age, rather than at a later point in life. Most auricle deformation is hereditary and affects five percent of the population. These anomalies can range from missing creases or cartilage, being too large or too small, or generally being misshapen. The most common ear complaint is that they stick out too far from the head, and many people opt to have them surgically pinned back through otoplasty.

Patients receiving otoplasty are sometimes only given a local anesthetic for the procedure; children are given a general anesthetic to eliminate fear or stress during surgery. The process can sometimes be done as an outpatient procedure, or might require a hospital stay depending on the level of deformity. The surgery can usually be performed using only one incision, or even none at all by using a needle to reshape the cartilage. Dissolving sutures are then used on the ear, and a large bandage protects it during the healing process.

Even after the initial bandaging is removed, it is important to wear a protective headband for two weeks while sleeping to avoid tearing the sutures. You will not be able to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses for at least a week because they can irritate the incision site on the back of the ear. Swimming and sports activities should be avoided for two weeks to one month after surgery to reduce the risk of infection or injury. Make sure you complete your dose of antibiotics to prevent infection, and tell your doctor immediately if your ears are not healing properly.
