Out With The Old Habits, In With The New Habits To Create A New Eating Plan

The other day Rich and I were discussing what we each thought the meaning of addiction is. Rich thinks it is something that we are UNABLE to give up. I think it is something that you CAN give up, but something that you CAN NOT stop thinking about. The on line Merriam Webster dictionary offers this definition of addiction:

Function: Noun

1. the quality or state of being addicted

2. compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly: persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

Function: Verb

1. to devote or surrender (oneself) to something habitually or obsessively

Then according to an article written by Bill Asanjo MS, CRC, Ken Wells, Thomson Gale, Gale, Detroit, Gale Encyclopedia of Children's Health, 2006; the definition of addiction is a physical or mental dependence on a behavior or substance that a person feels powerless to stop. I guess both Rich and I were right.

The Merriam Webster online dictionary offers these definitions for:

"eating disorders".

Function: noun

any of several psychological disorders (as anorexia nervosa or bulimia) characterized by serious disturbances of eating behavior.

"compulsive "; referring to "compulsive overeating"

Function: adjective

1: having power to compel

2: of, relating to, caused by, or suggestive of psychological compulsion

compulsive actions a compulsive gambler

Online Wikipedia explains "compulsive overeating" as:

Being characterized by an addiction to food. An individual suffering from compulsive overeating disorder engages in frequent episodes of uncontrolled eating, or binging, during which they may feel frenzied or out of control.

"binge eating"; binge eating disorder is a medical syndrome in which, according to currently accepted definitions, people:

feel their eating is out of control

eat what most people would think is an unusually large amount of food

eat much more quickly than usual during binge episodes

eat until so full they are uncomfortable

eat large amounts of food, even when they are not really hungry

eat alone because they are embarrassed about the amount of food they eat

feel disgusted, depressed, or guilty after overeating.

Let's look at how the bad habits, that people establish for themselves, are given eye catching important looking titles or labels. Addiction, Dependence, Eating Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia, Compulsive Overeating, Binge Eating and Medical Syndrome. These look like unfortunate serious conditions that people are born with and will carry with them for the rest of their lives. It looks like treatment by a professional is needed. These conditions look serious enough that they may possibly even require drugs to assist with treatment. Once your condition is given a label or title, it becomes much, much harder to correct. In reality, these conditions are merely ESTABLISHED BAD HABITS. Bad habits CAN ALWAYS BE BROKEN.

I couldn't help but laugh when I read, in the dictionary, the phrase "addiction to reading". This can only mean that someone finds an activity that is enjoyable, repeats it over and over, and then a habit is established. I personally think reading is a good habit to establish and certainly is not an addiction.

Be it a good habit or a bad habit, the creation of a habit is always possible. Most people enjoy eating. Healthy food should be eaten in balanced amounts and is supposed to be used, ONLY, to keep us alive and healthy, mentally and physically. Unfortunately we are continually exposed to a huge variety of processed food that isn't healthy at all and is not supposed to be consumed. We put our bodies through hell every time we eat something that is no longer in it's natural state; that is stripped of all it's nutrition, heated, irradiated, and stuffed full of additives. Our bodies even develop a tolerance and an acceptance of processed food and drink.

Access to processed food is fast and easy. That's what the attraction is to unhealthy food. We practice over and over again the act of purchasing fast, easy, unhealthy food; effectively establishing a very bad habit.

How can we break our bad habit of purchasing and over eating unhealthy processed food, void of vitamins, minerals and nutrients? We Humans are born with the ability to CHOOSE. Once we establish the bad habit of over eating fast and easy unhealthy food, we no longer have to be bothered with the work of making a choice. It's almost like we have forgotten that there is a huge variety of healthy foods that taste good. We've become zombie like. This is where we WAKE OURSELVES UP, realize that we have a bad habit to break and MAKE A CONSIOUS EFFORT to break the established bad habit.

Forget ANALYZING the whys and all of the reasons behind establishing the bad habit. Trying to find the answer takes too long and will probably not be accurate and exact anyway. You'll get nowhere focusing on the negative. All of your energy now needs to be focused on the positive aspects of healthy, nourishing, good tasting food.

I'll share with you an awesome habit that I've established. For breakfast and lunch I have a glass of Barley Green with a piece of fruit. What have I accomplished with this habit? My breakfast and lunch are amazingly HEALTHY HEALTHY HEALTHY and include fiber. I've saved a ton of time and don't have to worry about making choices for those 2 meals. I've saved money by not spending AT LEAST $10 per day (if I prepare these 2 meals myself). Ive saved money on gas by not going out to eat these 2 meals. This habit is low in fat and calories. You get the point. It's a good habit! Prep tip: if I should have a little extra time for the breakfast Barley Green, I make a Barley Green smoothie. I put 2 3 bananas and 1 cup 1 1/2 cups of distilled water into my Vita Mix. Blend on high until smooth. Pour into a glass and mix a heaping Tablespoon of Barley Green into it. This tastes wonderful and we sometimes even use it, not just for breakfast, but for a treat in the evening.

A few side effects of eating healthy foods daily are:

Weight Loss

Healthy Skin, hair and nails

Mental Alertness

Appetite control

Portion control

Ability to focus on subjects other than food

Depression gone

This is only the beginning of the side effect list. If you'd like to keep me posted on how your journey to "get your cells healthy" is going, please feel free to drop me an email.

KEEP WORKING TOWARDS ESTABLISHING THAT GOOD HABIT OF EATING HEALTHY, BALANCED AND ONLY ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU PICTURE PERFECT AND HAPPY.

You can do it! Remember, if we have our health, we're not lucky, we're smart!
