Outdoor Audio 101

Most people enjoy listening to music as often as possible

. Audiophiles, especially, know the importance of creating a home audio system that can be enjoyed for years to come. Sound quality is everything when it comes to music after all. And for those who want to truly enjoy music inside and outside the home, outdoor audio equipment allows us to do so. However, it is a much different environment and one that can often pose a challenge thanks to traffic, animals, and neighbors.

One of the main challenges of outdoor audio is bass. Because of "noise pollution," audio can often come across as diluted instead of full-bodied. In order to ensure the audio is up to par, choose speakers with excellent low-frequency, around 60Hz or below. There are outdoor subwoofers and they will prove to be a good investment to produce additional low-end sound.

Outdoor audio equipment is, of course, made to withstand the elements. But naturally the better brands and the more money you spend will further provide speakers that can really take a beating from Mother Nature. However, it is still recommended you place the speakers in a protected area for the best results and to guarantee they last a long time.

Audiophiles know that speaker placement is key, both indoors and outdoors. The higher the speaker placement, the larger the sound projection. Do not place speakers more than ten feet high or else the sound quality will be dismal. Set the speakers about twelve feet apart from the desired listening area and about eight to ten feet apart from each other. Speakers placed near a wall or any solid surface will increase the bass output.

If you're mounting more than one pair of speakers, alternate between left and right channel speakers on the same wall. This will create stereo sound from every angle of the area. If mounting in on a square deck with one in each corner, the two left channel speakers should be in opposite corners and same goes for the right channel. Have a rectangular deck? Try mounting three speakers along one long wall and one on the shorter wall. Keep in mind that if you do not hear enough sound, do not simply raise the volume all the way up. Instead, you will need to add more speakers.

It's best to mount outdoor audio speakers to a solid wood or masonry surface. It is not recommended to attach them to aluminum or cedar sidings. It will not be strong enough to support the weight.
