Many people cringe at the thought of going to the airport to take a flight. They would rather take a train, or take a bus or drive to their destinations. The recent spate of aircraft accidents has only served to increase aerophobia. It doesn't have to be this way. There are methods you can apply to effectively reduce anxiety and fear even before you step in an airport.

Are You A Victim?

First, you need to identify your fear or anxiety level before you figure out the best method to tackle it. Mild case: you grow anxious when the airplane door closes, during take off, turbulence during the flight and when landing. Medium case: you despise the flight option and go for it only when all other options have been exhausted. You also experience much discomfort during flight and sometimes you require assurances from the crew concerning safety. Extreme case: you avoid flight completely no matter the situation or opportunity at hand.

Triggers And Symptoms

Fear of flight is triggered by different factors depending on individuals and their anxiety levels. The main triggers are:

Claustrophobia i.e. fear of being in enclosed spaces.

Agoraphobia i.e. fear of heights

Fear of not being in control

Motion sickness

Fear of hijackings or terrorism

Fear of flying over water

Fear of turbulence

Fear of crashing and death

Sensational Media reports on air crashes are also a contributing factor to flight fear.

The victim of flight fear may suffer from panic attacks and vomiting episodes before, during and after the flight.

Negative Effect

Fear Of Flying can adversely affect the sufferer's lifestyle. Social relations, business and career development, travel opportunities and events are some of the aspects affected by this condition.

Managing The Condition

Aerophobia, like most other phobias is a condition of the mind. Mind based approach to management and healing is therefore called for. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been suggested as a more sober approach to managing fear of flight than medication. In this instance, methods such as hypnotherapy, psychotherapy and counseling are used to determine the initial sensitizing event. Hence, by determining the initial cause of the fear, therapy is used to treat it.

Behavioral therapy has its drawbacks however in that it is of limited value when the sufferer experiences externally manifested symptoms such as those associated with panic attacks.


Management by use of medicine has also been recommended. It is however difficult to apply, since there are different types of fliers and frequent ones may become drug dependent. Other methods of management such as group programs, relaxation techniques and alcohol consumption are all moot.

Prevention is better than cure may be a common clich, but as vaccines have proven in modern medical practice, combating a condition before it occurs is usually the best way to go.

Pre emptive healing seeks to assuage the mind giving the patient calmness, tranquility and peace of mind to get rid of the fear of flight.
