Overcoming Excessive Sweating

Before exploring excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) firstly lets consider why people sweat as this will aid our understanding of hyperhidrosis

. You must be aware that sweating is a completely normal bodily function that occurs in response to an increase in body temperature to cool us down the process of thermoregulation. I should also point out that we also sweat in response to emotional distress including stress or anxiety as an example, and if you are prone to this you may find yourself sweating more than normal. All humans sweat in variable amounts, some more than others, and more often than not men will sweat more than females. Its only when this sweating becomes excessive and influences day-to-day life that complications may begin to appear. If it seems like youre constantly sweating all through the day without any apparent cause and have to change your clothes or bathe regularly as a result, it is likely you have hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis can be classified as either generalised or localised. With general hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating will be noticeable throughout the entire body and with local hyperhidrosis the excessive sweat will be seen only at one or two specific locations of the body such as the armpits or hands. To this date the exact cause of hyperhidrosis is still not fully understood but what we do appreciate is that a portion of the nervous system known as the sympathetic nervous system controls the sweat glands. If the sympathetic nervous system becomes over-active for whatever reason, the sweat glands will secrete more sweat than usual resulting in hyperhidrosis. If the sympathetic over-stimulation is limited to specific areas of the body, this will present as localised hyperhidrosis but on the other hand if the over-stimulation is not specific to a certain area of the body, generalised hyperhidrosis will be observed.

In addition to being either local or general, hyperhidrosis is also categorised as either primary or secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating without the presence of any other medical ailment that may cause abnormal sweat as a side effect. Secondary hyperhidrosis is the excessive sweat as a side effect of another medical ailment or as a side effect of certain medications. A few of the more common diseases connected with secondary hyperhidrosis include Parkinsons disease, obesity and diabetes. As a result of this it is generally recommended that you take a trip to your doctor if there is any question you have hyperhidrosis to rule out the possibility of having one of these other conditions.

When it comes to treating hyperhidrosis there are two choices - conservative or surgical. Before contemplating any surgical options, conservative methods should always be tried first and foremost as these are safer, more cost effective and often sufficient to eliminate or at least reduce excessive sweating for the sufferer. Conversely, if the excessive sweating is extreme and the conservative methods fail to work then surgery may have to be considered.

No matter how much your sweating problem affects you there is an abundance of resources available out there and you can overcome this condition. I strongly recommend taking a trip to see your doctor to discuss your options and you may be closer than you think to living a life without sweat!
