When you buy a dog you are signing up for a big commitment

First, you have to make sure that you are taking the time to train your dog. He or she needs to learn how to go potty outside and what is and is not appropriate to be doing while he or she is in your home.
Some people prefer to keep their dogs outside only. If you are going to keep your dog outside after he or she matures you want to make sure that you designate an appropriate age to leave the dog outside.
When the dog is young, you are going to want to make sure he or she is able to stay warm and secure in your home. There are not a lot of people that understand this concept and can lose a dog because of a lack of care.
Having a warm place for the dog to sleep is very important. You want to make sure that your dog feels secure in your home because if the dog feels secure he or she will then be in a much more conducive state to learning.
After you have established a good place for the dog to stay in your home you must be consistent with your rules. There are a lot of people that give their dog special treatment when it is a puppy because they do not feel that training is necessary yet.
The habits that you develop in your puppy from the get go are very important. You have to make sure that your puppy knows that you are the boss but you need to balance this authoritarian nature with love for the animal.
You should also make sure that you take the time to train your dog how to go on walks. This is something that will be very important in later years and will help you and your dog immensely as the dog grows up.
When your dog is young it is easy to correct it when it misbehaves on a walk. As the dog gets larger and older it may get more set in its ways and harder to correct and it may also get larger which makes correction even more difficult.
When you are first training your dog to go on walks you should take the time to teach the dog formal commands. When you tell the dog to heal you want to make sure that the dog knows that this means stay by your side.
You should also make sure that the dog understands which side you want him or her to be walking on. Training the dog to only walk on your left of your right side will save you a lot of trouble while you are on walks.
If you dog is troublesome in the first few years you will have many options for correction. You can take your dog to a training seminar or a class that has specifically been designed to help dogs and their owners learn how to go on walks.
Some people do not have the time or the money to take their dog to a class, so they choose to do this from home. When you train your dog from home you have to make sure that you understand how important consistency is.
The consistency that you need is something that will make a big difference throughout the process. The dog will want to please you and if he or she knows what you want and how to make you happy, more than likely he or she will try to do this.
As you are taking the time to get to know the dog you will start to get familiar with the dog's personality. Each dog will have an individual personality that you will have to adjust to and learn to work with.
If you are walking and you notice that the dog is continually barking at objects on the road or pulling on the leash you should address this concern immediately. A great way to do this is to stop the dog and lay the dog on ground.
After you have the dog on the ground you can then turn him or her onto his or her back. When the dog is in this position you should then gently chide the dog for misbehaving.
