Peridot is a lovely green gem that is a Birthstone and an Anniversary gemstone.

Peridot is the birthstone for August and is a semi precious stone. Peridot Birthstone is sought after bydiscerning women who love the olive-green color (a reason why it is called Olivine). The color of a Peridot could be sparkling pale green, yellowish green, olive green or medium dark green. Sometimes these beautiful jewels can be mistaken for Emeralds.

Peridot is also the anniversary gemstone for the 16th year of marriage. It is not so expensive. So it can be within everyone's reach and could be used more than now.

When looking for Peridots, first make sure that it is a genuine, natural stone. Synthetic (Lab created) and imitation stones look beautiful and are cheap. But they have no real value. If you want a natural Peridot gemstone or Peridot jewelry, (which, of course, is more expensive) go to a reputable dealer. You may also ask for a certificate of authenticity.

How do you judge a good Pridot? You will want one with a good rich color. Pale colored gems do not have premium value. Look for clean, clear stones with only minor inclusions. If there be any inclusions, they should not be noticeable to the naked eye. Be wary of cracks, for these may later become worse and the stone may even break up.

You should remember that the hardness of Peridots is somewhere around 6.5 to 7. Hence they will begin to show scratches if not cared for. The other good green stone, the Emerald gemstone, which is harder, is much more expensive. Emeralds usually have lots of inclusions.
