Packing Up For The Big Move
Okay, so you're staring at a closing date on your new home, the movers have been hired, and it's time to start transforming your current domicile into a bunch of little taped up boxes containing all of your worldly possessions. All that should remain is moving said boxes to your new abode, and letting the contents spill out to begin your newest chapter in life.
The question, for most of us who live in a world of disorganization anyway, is "how do the boxes get filled?" "How do you know what goes in what?" and "How do you know where they go when they arrive?" Okay, that's three questions, but you get the point.
Packing doesn't have to be a daunting or intimidating task, at least not if you plan ahead and have at least some idea of what you are doing going in. So get your packing tape and black Sharpies ready.
Pack up the least used rooms first, starting with items that are used the least. Guest bathrooms and guest bedrooms should be the first targets.
Pack up all decorative items first. Label the boxes so you know what is in them. You don't want to be playing guess-what-goes-where when you are in your new home. Trust me on this one.
When packing up stereo or video equipment, have all your cords labeled so you know what goes where. This will prove invaluable when the time comes to wire everything back up.
Framed wall pictures should go last, preferably in the same box, ideally with newspaper or bubble wrap between them to prevent scratching or breaking.
The kitchen is going to be the hardest part, what with little things like perishable food items and whatnot. The ideal solution is to make sure all food is eaten in the weeks leading up to the move so you have less to pack away. Pack up your kitchen except for a few paper plates and plastic cups that can be disposed of easily. If your budget allows you to just eat take out those last few days, do it and make sure your kitchen is securely packed up. You may be surprised to discover what you can in fact do without.
Remember to leave out all of your cleaning supplies, as you will no doubt want to clean your house or apartment one final time before moving on.
If you have a home office, pack up and label everything clearly. You definitely don't want little things such as financial records to go missing. If you have a computer, I recommend moving that yourself. For me the thought of trusting high end electronics such as comps or plasma TVs to a moving company is a terrifying one. It won't kill you to make a couple of trips in your car to get everything moved.
For your bathroom, leave out a couple of towels and your basic toiletry items. Think of what you would take on an overnight hotel stay. Pack up everything that you do not use on a daily basis. Look for any medicines that have expired or are near expiration and throw them out as well. The more you can trim down what you are moving, the easier the move will be.
The final room to be packed up will be your bedroom. You should first pack all the clothes not currently in season. Pack a small suitcase or bag to live out of for a couple of days during the time required to get moved and sort out all your stuff at the new destination.
You may even want to put sticky notes on your furniture and label the boxes so the movers will know exactly what rooms they are to go into.
Of course for packing purposes you can always find boxes of varying shapes and sizes from a variety of sources. Bubble wrap is always ideal for packing delicate objects, but in a pinch, crumpled up newspaper will suffice. You can also use towels to wrap around larger pieces such as wall art to keep them protected.
In addition, make sure that your movers are properly licensed, bonded, and insured, just in case your plasma TV gets totaled or that antiques vase from your grandmother shows up at your new home in various pieces.
So get packing, and happy moving day!
