Even though most people speak of it as "paleo diet", the more accurate term would be "paleo lifestyle", since it's not just about what you eat, but how you relate to food and nutrition, as well. Here are some general guidelines that you should keep in mind:
1) Plan ahead your food supplies:
You don't suppose your ancestors ran to the forest whenever they got hungry, looking for a rabbit or a dear, right? Back in the day, they had to plan ahead and make sure they always had a good supply of food available.
Even though we no longer have the need to plan ahead, we should! Because when we fail to keep our cupboards stocked full, that's when we keep getting those urges to eat bad food out of hunger and impulse.
2) Cook ahead of time to save time.
Some of the best recipes in the paleo cookbooks can take a consirable amount of time to prepare. Here's a simple way to get around this problem: cook big! Always prepare more food than you will eat, and keep the remainders neatly stored in the refrigerator.
You can use this cooked food when you're in a rush some other time, and even mix it up with other ingredients to make fresh food. Use your imagination, and your supply of tupperware containers.
3) Always have a nutritional back-up plan.
When you anticipate that you'll be eating outside your house, it's best to be prepared... since sometimes you just won't be able to find paleo-friendly diner houses. In this case, it might be a good idea carrying around a can of tune, beef jerky or fruit that you can use to complement whatever meals happen to be available.
Remember, Paleo is not a diet, it's a lifestyle! If you're willing to commit to this lifestyle you will get many benefits in time... but you must learn how to plan things ahead, to make sure you always have something right to eat, when the hunger strikes.
