Parents Guide To Buying School Shoes
Buying school shoes can be a difficult task
Buying school shoes can be a difficult task. There are a multitude of factors to consider and unfortunately it is not always straightforward understanding if your child's shoes are a perfect fit or not. The following therefore are 10 simple guides to follow when choosing school shoes for your child so you have piece of mind that your child can go to school happy.
1) Make sure you measure your child's feet taking into account not just length but also width. All shoe stores have foot measures so ask a staff member to assist you in this.
2) Although this may sound obvious it still needs to be said, make sure you measure both of your child's feet. It is not uncommon for children (or adults for that matter) to have one foot slightly bigger than other. You may need to ask for one shoe half a size bigger.
3) Never give your child hand me down school shoes. There are two reasons for this. Firstly your child's feet are still developing and so second hand shoes will not offer the same support and can cause complications with your child's posture. Secondly older shoes can come with unwanted germs and funguses that can cause athletes foot - not very pleasant.
4) Unless you want to keep buying shoes throughout the year it is recommended that you buy shoes that are roughly half a size bigger than your child's current foot size. Naturally this depends on age but children's feet grow at a rapid rate and so what fits in September might not fit in November!
5) There is a common misconception that if shoes are uncomfortable all you have to do is simply break them in. Indeed this is true to some degree however shoes should be comfortable from the off. So if your child finds his/her school shoes uncomfortable when trying them on its time to look for another pair.
6) Heel size is an important factor. You should pick shoes with a heel size no more than 4cm (roughly 1 and a half inches) any bigger and it can harm your child's posture as well as cause discomfort after prolonged wear.
7) Check how the shoe fits around the heel. A big indicator of shoes that do not fit is if your child's feet slide up and down in the heel area. Also make sure there is enough room for toes to wiggle. There should be roughly a fingers width of distance between the biggest toe and the top of the shoe.
8) Check the heel and arch area of the shoe. This should be firm to support the foot.
9) Once you have bought your child's shoes make sure you inspect them now and again. Unusual wear and tear is an indicator of problems with posture so it is recommended you catch this problem before it develops further.
10) Above all remember that school shoes need to be practical for school. They will undergo a huge amount wear and tear due to activities ranging from football to muddy school trips so pick a pair that can withstand this.
