The Fall Flavours Festival is an island wide food festival highlighting authentic and traditional foods enjoyed on PEI. The food is usually always harvested no more than a mile away from where it is served making it the freshest food available. The wines served in conjunction are also made from home grown grapes at local wineries and vineyards. When you're not sampling, you can participate in culinary and harvesting workshops. Many PEI cottages and hotels play a large roll in these festivals so take your time when selecting your accomodations.
Most of the activities take place in Charlottetown, however several are spread all over the Island throughout the month of September. The Fall Flavours is presided over this year by Chef Michael Smith, Canada's most famous chef.
If you like seafood and shellfish, then the International Shellfish Festival also takes place in the middle of September and is said to be the biggest kitchen party in Atlantic Canada. It is sponsored by the Culinary Institute of Canada and features demonstrations of mussel preparation, clam and oyster shucking as well as how to prepare quahogs. Some of the best chowder on the face of the earth is prepared during this time. So check out the many chowder competitions where you can actually taste the competitors' offerings. In addition, there are competitions for expert oyster shuckers to witness and enjoy. Afterward take advantage of one of many boat cruises available.
Along with the good eats, the fall season provides a spectacular back drop of colors and cooler weather for your outdoor fun.
