Penang Bird Park: The Tropical Avian Paradise

Located just off the northwest coast of the Malaysian Peninsular

, Penang is an island that offers a wealth of tropical beaches, lush rainforests and major historical sites showcasing key markers of Malaysian culture and history. Its capital city of George Town has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, being one of the three great historic settlements along the Strait of Malacca.

Apart from being a cornerstone of Malaysian culture, history and architecture, Penang is also a haven for nature lovers. Among its beautiful botanical gardens, Orchid, Hibiscus & Reptile Garden, Butterfly Farm and Penang National Park, the Penang Bird Park emerges as prime favorite among ornithologists and bird-watchers everywhere.

Established in 1988, the park spans 5 acres of mainland which is home to over 300 species of birds, half of them being indigenous to Malaysia. It is the first and largest bird park of its kind in the country, acting as both a breeding and conservation ground for endangered species. The park is landscaped in a garden concept, with exotic selections of flora amidst cascading waterfalls and natural ponds imitating the natural habitat of diverse species ranging from little sunbirds to 8-foot ostriches and eagles. Most birds are tame and are either free-roaming or housed in large walk in aviaries which encourage visitors to hand-feed and photograph them. The parks fauna also includes other wildlife such as pythons and monitors and the smallest deer in the world, the mouse-deer.

Whether traveling on holiday or business, bird enthusiasts staying at a Penang hotel should be able to easily arrange a visit. Being located along the North-South highways, the park is accessible either via a 10 minute bus ride from the ferry terminals or a 5-minute drive from Penang Bridge toll plaza.
