Referees or marshals generally regulate games and watch the course to make certain the enforcement of the rules and help ensure the safety of all players. Game rules can differ from field to field. Certain tweeks to, or variations of the rules are needed in some cases to help keep players safe, discourage cheating, or just to keep the game fair for all parties involved.

THE MASK RULE

People forget and paintballs get discharged. Just about all reputable fields will enforce a mask rule. This prohibits players from removing their mask within the playing area and or within a certain distance of the field. This rule generally works in conjunction with having players use a barrel block, and or disconnecting their gas source from their marker. This rule would generally extend to spectators and officials as well. As a further safety precaution, some fields discourage firing paintballs at a player head during play.

MINIMUM DISTANCE RULES

Paintballs can travel upwards of 300 feet per second. In light of this, commercial paintball fields may implement a minimum distance rule. This simply means that players cannot shoot at each other if they are closer than the minimum distance set forth by the fields governing body. A lot of recreational fields put into effect a modified version of this rule called the surrender rule. This means that a player who charges to within the minimum range has to give his enemy the chance to surrender before shooting. This rule is not really used in tournaments because the attacking player is left exposed and must stop shooting while asking his prey to surrender. Another close range courtesy/safety precaution is the tapping of the opponent with the barrel of your marker after you have crept up next to them without being detected.

MARKING A PLAYER

When a player is marked with paintballs, an official will call them out. This is where good sportsmanship comes into play because the players may also be expected to follow the honor code should a referees view be blocked. Field owners/operators may spell out variations to this rule. For instance, you may be issued a tag indicating certain body sections only will be counted as hits. If a player is hit by any number of paintballs good enough to make a quarter-sized mark anywhere on his/her body or equipment that player is out. A great deal of professional fields and organized tournaments, count any hit to a player, their equipment, and sometimes objects you have picked up at random on the battlefield as a hit as well. If a ball breaks on an object and sprays the player with paint, that doesnt usually count as a hit. After a player is knowingly hit and eliminated, common courtesy and safety prohibit additional shooting of said player.

In an attempt to cheat some players may try wiping paintballs off from a legitimate hit. If they are caught they are usually called out of the game, and can be ejected from the field especially for multiple offences of this type of cheating. In some tournaments the offending player and his two closest teammates are eliminated.

Paintball is played with an almost limitless assortment of rules and variations of the rules. These regulations can depend on the field, the game, or something the players agree on before starting. The object in all paintball games is simple, complete the tasks set forth in the game without getting shot. How and where a player is hit plays a role.
