Perceiving Our Reality
Perceiving Our Reality
Perceiving Our Reality
I see the same world as you do, but not the same way.
There is nothing mysterious about it.
Everybody sees the world through the idea he has of himself.
As you think yourself to be, so you think the world to be. If you imagine yourself as separate from the world, ...the world will appear as separate from you and you will experience desire and fear.
I do not see the world as separate from me and so there is nothing for me to desire, or fear. - Nisargadatta Maharaj
I came across this great quote yesterday that I think many of us can get on an intuitive level but if more of us got on a day to day action level, we could truly experience a deeper understanding of life, ourselves and others.
I've been writing a lot lately about self love and how that has everything to do with your ability to truly love others in relationships but it actually goes beyond relationships. Our perception is the only tool that we have to filter the infinite stream of data around us in life and make sense of it. This perception is driven by our beliefs and ultimately looks for data in the outside world that matches with our internal beliefs like a magnet. This type of perpetual loop could be a good or bad thing depending on your beliefs and the outcomes they are creating/perceiving for you.
Where does self love come in?
I have yet to meet a person in my life that has a empowered, positive perspective on life but a lowly perspective of themselves and vice versa. The two perspectives seem to go hand in hand (often with realities to match). Self love is the engine that drives our perception of everything in life which is tied to our beliefs which forms our creation/perception of reality. Why not use that perceptual cycle to your advantage? A shift in perspective and a little self love is all that it takes.
Where do our relationships with others fit in?
This is where it gets really interesting. Lets go back to the beginning of the quote... "I see the same world as you do, but not the same way. There is nothing mysterious about it. Everybody sees the world through the idea he has of himself. As you think yourself to be, so you think the world to be" We have a natural tendency to want to judge others who act outside the norm of our own narrow view of what is appropriate in any given situation. This judgement ultimately creates a disturbance within us which shapes our perspective of that person and sometimes beyond that into a deeper stereotype.
What we have to understand is this...our EGO would love for us to believe that our version of reality is Truth and anyone that acts outside of that box is wrong, dumb, silly, idiotic, crazy or whatever creative adjective your mind comes up with to label the "other". The truth is, our reality is merely a perception, just as the reality of the other is merely a perception. That reality is based on a mirror that we all have from within that looks to see itself in the outside world. Based on that premise, wouldn't it make more sense to treat others with compassion, especially those that act out in ways that we perceive as destructive? Our EGO would love for us to continue on the path that we have by fighting fire with fire...and look how far we've come as a result of that?
The point of it all is this...your perception is incredibly powerful, use it wisely, your life depends on it!
