Perfect For Any Party: The Planter's Punch

Any great party can be kicked up a notch with a fabulous drink recipe

. Often, punch recipes are chosen for gatherings because of their versatility. Planter's punch is a rum drink that's recipe was first published in a magazine 1908. How Planter's punch got its origin is under debate. Some say its namesake is the Planter's Hotel in Saint Louis, Missouri, while others say its name tells the story of a Jamaican planter's wife who mixed the drink for workers to cool down.

I frequently serve this drink at parties hosted at my home during the summer. A real crowd pleaser, this drink is usually chosen for summer menus because it is so versatile and easy to prepare. It is cool and refreshing, and allows you to pour almost any citrus juice in as one of the ingredients, without affecting the taste a great deal. We usually have rum and grenadine on hand to make mixed drinks, so the ability to add almost any juice to the cocktail is important. The amount of time it takes to prepare the mixed drinks also heavily affects our drink selections. This is because we do not want to sacrifice time that we could be visiting with our guests, in the kitchen.

The ingredients for Planter's punch are: two ounces of dark rum, one-fourth ounce grenadine, and equal parts of sour mix and either pineapple or orange juice, as filler. The total prep time for this drink is around three minutes.

To prepare the drink, a total of five easy steps are required. The first step is to pour the dark rum, juice mix, and grenadine into an ice-filled mixing glass. The second step is to shake these three ingredients well. The third step is for the contents to be strained into a highball glass that is filled with ice. The fourth step is to top the Planter's punch drink off with club soda, if desired. Lastly, garnish the glass with your fruit slice and cherry, if desired.

There can be many different twists to this classic drink. Some variations of the Planter's punch recipe call for combinations that include curacao, bitters, or punch mix as the filler. Amaretto is sometimes added for a mao-tai- like twist. Maraschino cherries, lemon slices, or orange slices are usually used for garnish.

To liven up your next outdoor party, a mixed drink would satisfy many guests. An excellent choice for these outdoor get-togethers would be Planter's punch, because of its simplicity, versatility, and overall deliciousness.
