What Is The Best Way To Teach French For Schools?
How did you learn French when you were at school
? The chances are it was a case of the teacher writing a few words in French on the board in chalk, and getting the class to recite them or write them down. As a method of learning it has been used over and over again. But it isnt the most inspiring method of learning, is it?
Today however things are different. Some schools learn their languages in a very different way. French tours have allowed pupils to see the language they are learning in a very real way, a way that stays with them long after they have gone home. As such it is easier to get better results from any class when French tours are incorporated into the learning process.
Of course the reason why French for schools works so much better in these situations is because pupils get the opportunity to see what life is like in France. This is very different from learning just a few French words during a normal class in their own country. Somehow it seems removed from the actual experience which of course it is.
French for schools can also go way beyond a simple lesson when this kind of approach is taken. French tours are organised that enable a class of English pupils to go across to learn with a class of French pupils. Can you imagine actually sitting in on a lesson in a French school, hearing the language you are learning instead of just seeing it on a board or in a book? This way of learning truly immerses the pupils in the experience, giving them the best possible way of exploring the language in a way that would not otherwise be possible.
Of course the exchange also works in reverse, with French pupils coming to this country to learn. As such it fosters good relationships with youngsters from another country; sometimes friendships will be forged that will last for a long time to come.
The whole idea is to get learning out of the classroom and into a more practical environment. It is more enjoyable for the pupils and it makes the learning process much easier as well. There is no doubt that good results can be garnered from this way of learning French, especially if it begins when the pupils are only just starting to learn the language. We might expect to see it in more schools in the future, as those taking part report their success of learning French by visiting France as well as learning in the classroom.
It may sound very different to how we learned French as children. But it is good to know that the children of today have a way to learn that is worth exploring.
