Personal And Home Safety Tips

Making sure you and your home are safe from events such as theft

, fires and even emergency medical situations is important if you want to feel comfortable and safe. While none of us can predict what will happen tomorrow, employing some common sense precautions today can go a long way to keeping you and your family from harm. Best of all, many of these personal and home safety tips require very little in the way of cash or effort.

Making Sure Your Home is Secure

Many personal safety tips are geared toward making sure that the home is protected against burglars and others who attempt to enter the home illegally. In this instance, the focus is on making sure that gaining access to the home is not a simple task. While home security protection in the form of a burglar alarm is wise, don't rely on the alarm exclusively. Some of those old time methods can also help add to your security.

Every window and exterior door should be equipped with a high quality lock. Ideally, those locks will be easy for you to operate but somewhat difficult for anyone without the proper key or code to breach. While locks won't keep out a determined burglar, they do make the process more time consuming. As a bonus, the burglars may end up making a great deal of noise as they attempt to break in. These two qualities provide a little more time for the police to arrive on the scene.

Developing a Fire Escape Plan

Fires of all types can occur in the home. From grease fires in the kitchen that get out of control to fires caused by faulty wiring, you may have only a short amount of time to get out of the house. In order to maximize your chances of leaving before the fire traps you in the home, you need a working fire alarm and a detailed exit plan.

Remember the fire drills that were once commonplace in many schools? Every teacher was assigned a specific route to exit the building. What you may not know is those same teachers were provided with a backup plan in the event the fire made the primary route of escape impossible. Keep this in mind as you develop a home escape plan.

Make sure the batteries in your fire alarm are strong. Test the alarm at least once a month. At least every couple months, you and your family should hold a fire drill and make sure everyone knows how to avoid the fire and get out of the house safely. Don't forget to designate a location for everyone to meet after exiting. That will make it much easier to ensure everyone is present and no one was left behind.

Your Home Medical Kit

The ability to handle medical emergencies is also something you want to address. One of the best personal safety tips is to keep at least one fully stocked first aid kit in the home. If you have children, consider stocking two or three kits and place them in strategic locations around the house. For example, keep the primary kit in the kitchen. Additional kits can reside in the kitchen and each bathroom in the home.

Home security protection and safety is not a task that you can outsource completely. Along with a secure security service, take proactive steps to ensure you have everything needed to get by until professional help arrives. Doing so will make it much easier to relax and enjoy spending time in the comfort of your own home.
