Personal Emergency Response System

A Personal Emergency Response System (PERS), also known as Medical Emergency Response System

, is an electronic instrument developed with an aim to help you call for help in case of emergency. It is especially useful for elderly or disabled people who live on their own.

A PERS has three main parts:

1.A radio transmitter

2.A console that connects to your telephone

3.An emergency response center

The radio transmitter comes in the form of a Help button that can be worn around your neck or wrist. When you need the help of police, firefighter or medical personnel, in case of an emergency, you have to press the help button of the transmitter, which then transmits a message to the console. The console contacts the emergency services by dialing a previously selected telephone number. The system has the ability to dial the number even if the telephone is engaged or kept off the hook. This is a very important feature of

Personal emergency response systems.

When the call reaches the emergency response center, the caller is identified by the system and the center reviews the type of emergency. They go through the medical history of the caller and contact the appropriate agencies. If the center is unable to contact you or determine the nature of your emergency, it will still send emergency service providers to your home to resolve the situation.

The transmitter Help buttons are made of waterproof material. Therefore, you can wear them to shower and swimming pool. The transmitter is powered by battery and thus, it is essential to check if the batteries are running properly from time to time.

The emergency response centers are of two types:

Manufacturer based: Usually have just one national center.

Provider based: These are situated in the local area of the caller.

You can rent, lease or purchase a PERS. Though most insurance companies dont pay for PERS, it is advisable to buy it because it can be life-saving.
