Personal Fitness: Know Thyself The Key to Success in Fitness

"What can I do to lose the fat from here?" and "What can I do to strengthen or tonemy _____________?" (Fill in the blank) Thoseare two fitness questions I get asked almost every day. Most people already have an answer in mind because it's usually not the first time they've asked the question.

How surprised would they be if I closed my eyes, touched my forehead and in my best gypsy accent I said something like, "Hmnn I see you getting up at 4:00 am and eating a half pint of ice cream... you do this often; oh, and when you walk, you take the hill on Reynolds Avenue way too slow."

Before any fitness professional can provide you with sound guidance and support he/she needs to be told some basic facts about you and the way you live.

When people ask for advice they want a clear, concise, personalized fitness picture. But when I ask them to tell me about their activity level and diet they give me a vague, impressionistic painting of their lifestyle. Having basic information, relevant to your fitness goals, ready for evaluation is your responsibility.

The problem is that taking personal responsibility for physical and mental fitness is not a part of most people's daily routine. It's something extra, something they get around to' when they have the time. This isn't good; just take a look around the next time you're in the grocery store.

Oh sure, I have motivated clients who make physical and mental health a daily part of their lives, but the number of people who have come and gone is double or triple those who 'get it' and stay. So, maybe I'm not doing my job? Maybe if I was a better motivator, more people would stay? Well, I have thought about that and all I can tell you is this:

In exercise you can't flex fat, and you can't train individuals who don't take their personal fitness seriously.

People, who try to workout without first making an honest appraisal of where they're at, and how they need to change, are lost like leaving on a long road trip to a place you've never been without directions, GPS or a map. Maybe that's you? If you're thinking of trying a fitness program for the first time I applaud, encourage and support your decision.

Bottom Line? Just remember there's something you need to do before you can hold up your end of the deal. Know Thyself!
