Theories of Possible Causes

There are many different theories as to causes and influences the occurrence of Adictive personality disorder or (Borderline Personality Disorder). Often there is a history of childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, witnessing violence in the home, emotional abuse and neglect. Patients often come from a background of dysfunctional family relationships. This suggests that trauma and early bad influences from a young age can cause personality disorder. This is not the only cause but a lot of sufferers have bad childhood experiences.

It is difficult to know how many people in the world have these disorders as many go un-diagnosed, they are often either people who appear very eccentric otheres or people everyone avoids. Of-course some cases are much worse than others.

A diagnosis of borderline personality disorder is only usually made in adults, not in children or adolescents. Thisbecause what appear to be signs and symptoms of borderline personality disorder may go away with maturity.

The main reasons people usually seek help are, Intense fear of abandonment, A pattern of unstable relationships, Unstable sense of identity, intense fear of abandonment, suicidal behaviour or self harm, wide mood swings, anger-related problems, such as frequently losing your temper or having physical fights or Periods of paranoia and loss of contact with reality.

These disorders are Notoriously difficult to treat, personality disorders tend to form in adolescense or early adulthood and persist throughout one's lifetime

It could also be a result of biological and genetic factors. There is lots of research to support this. Children with personality disorders often have children who develop the same problems.

Another theory is Personality Disorder can be attributed to brain damage caused to a baby in the womb or during or after birth. Or it could be caused by a chemical reaction in the brain.

Symptom substitution affects many addicts - they might find themselves quitting cigarettes only to become addicted to chewing gum or giving up coffee and becoming addicted to cola. The variations are different but the pattern is the same.

Most people with addictive personalities find that they do things in excess - for them it is all or nothing. Research indicates they are also likely to have difficulties in delaying gratification hence the constant need to fuel their addiction with their quick fix'.
