Pharmacy Technician Careers Explained

The pharmacy technician career is one of the largest expanding careers in the world today

. Recession is hitting pretty hard but this is not affecting the medical industry. People are still getting sick and US doctors are writing around 3.5 billion medical prescriptions every year.

It has been reputed that the years 2006 to 2016 are going to witness a record rising of jobs for pharmacy techs. This has been reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A career in pharmacy that includes pharmacy techs and other personnel might just be what you need if you have the aptitude and the interest in this career.

But this however does not mean that any one can get a job as a pharmacy technician. The jobs are many but so is the competition. There are some factors on which getting a good job depends.

The first of these is the education. You need to have the required training so that you can assist patients with their medicine. A good training will help you to understand which medicine can have possible side effects and what the combination of two or more medicines taken together can lead to. You will also have an idea of how to talk to customers.

But this is not all. Along with training, you also need to have a 'compelling' resume that will bring out your strong points and how they can help the company.

The strength of a good resume should never be underestimated. As Mike Johnston, CPhT, chairman and founder of the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) says, "Many people understand the basic components of a resume. But items that are specific to pharmacy technicians should also be included."

Johnston is also the author of Rx for Success: A Career Enhancement Guide for Pharmacy Technicians. There are some points you should keep in mind while writing your resume.

Objective Tailoring

Being a former president of the American Association of Pharmacy Technicians (AAPT), Susan Jeffrey knows what it takes to become a pharmacy tech. She says that while writing the objective of a resume, you should put in your desire to learn. She says, "Pharmacy technicians should add a sentence to their professional objectives that lets the hiring manager know they are interested in opportunities for further specialization or professional growth." For instance,

Career Objective: "To obtain a pharmacy technician position with an expanding company. Strong interest in pursuing professional development opportunities, including specialized training and licensure in the organization's growth areas."

Skills and Education

Education is a very important part. If you have had academic honors before, list them. Licensure and training details should also be listed carefully. If you have some additional skills like proficiency in more than one language or the ability to deal or dispense in billing or reimbursement for Medicaid, worker's compensation or insurance, you should mention those in your resume too. Many times when prospective employers look for an employee in a job site, these terms might function as keywords.
