Philadelphia Eagles - Back To The Future

For the Philadelphia Eagles, the theme of the 2010 Draft looked a little like the old Michael J

. Fox trilogy of films. The Eagles have traditionally made their mark in the NFL by focusing on a strong defense - a tradition that they avoided during last year's offensively-oriented Draft. This year's Draft, however, has them going back to the future, so to speak, as they reach back into the past in an attempt to repeat that which has served them so well for so long.

Bolstering the defense

After an 11-5 campaign and playoff appearance in 2009, the Eagles hope to build on that success. They know, however, that the only way that they can accomplish that goal is to buckle down defensively and restore the shine to a defense that was once among the League's best. Out of the team's 13 total selections, nine were defensive players! Beginning with Brandon Graham, the Michigan defensive end, the Eagles sent a clear message to anyone listening that the team intends to attack opposing quarterbacks with a vengeance in 2010. Graham's speed and tenacity should provide new firepower to the Eagles pass rush.

The secondary

To address what many considered to be the Eagles' most glaring weakness - their secondary - Philadelphia grabbed a safety out of South Florida. The addition of Nate Allen at the free safety position should help the team to finally be able to provide coverage against many of the big tight ends on opposing teams.

Unorthodox decisions

Among the remainder of the Eagles' picks is one that caused some consternation in the minds of the experts. Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, a high octane defensive end out of Washington, was thought by many to have too small of a body to fit neatly into any defensive line in the NFL. Watch for the Eagles to use him in special situations, where his speed along the line can break down opposing blocking schemes.

Overall, the Eagles have added depth and possibly some new looks to certain defensive formations during games. There is no reason to think that the team cannot make another run at their divisional title this year, and possibly even topple Dallas from its throne.
