Philips LCD TV 23" Model PF 4310 Review
Many people are opting to purchase a digital screen or flat panel TV over the traditional TV
. Although some may argue that traditional TVs still have better colour qualities, the many advantages of a flat panel screen TV (higher resolution, better picture quality and, also important, space saving) far outweighs these minor drawbacks in comparison. The amount of room that seems to open up when you have a flat panel television is tremendous, especially if you are limited to a small area and a
LCD display can also help you minimize cost by doubling up as a computer monitor as well as a television set. Not to be ignored is the well-known fact that the LCDs require about half the power of traditional TVs, weight less and also emit much less electromagnetic radiation.
After a couple of days of shopping around on the Internet, reading tons of reviews, I decided to go for the Philips 23PF4310 because of the price (around 450), availability and characteristics. Thinking at the dimensions of my normal size living room, I went for a 23-inch diagonal TV as it seemed optimal when considering the placement in the room and the optimal viewing distance. Since placing the order it took me two days to receive the
LCD TV. Easy to install straight from the box, this compact and stylish WXGA display is said to be ready for high-definition TV signals sources-HDTV broadcast or HDVD, and comes packed with features like a decent resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels on a viewable size of 58 cm, virtual Dolby surround for a cinema-like audio experience, progressive scanning, PC input that lets you also use the TV as a PC monitor through an DVI Digital PC input and that is not all. The search for the available TV channels is easy and straightforward, thanks to an Easy Tune facility. The on-screen settings menu is clear and easy to follow; it takes only a couple of minutes to play with the variety of settings (especially widescreen modes-Zoom 14:9, Zoom 16:9, Subtitle Zoom, Super Zoom, Widescreen, Conventional 4:3) and the TV is ready and customized for optimal view and listening.
The TV has a couple of options for the optimization of sound and image that gives you the impression of a personalized device. Some of its high-tech features, such as Crystal clear, for the colour and contrast enhancement, Active control, for the continuous optimization of the noise and sharpness, Smart picture for optimum picture settings and Incredible surround, for sound magnification give you the overall impression of a very significantly enhanced viewing experience. I have had this model for 4 months and I am impressed so far by its slim design incorporating the speakers on the side, the quality of the picture (contrast, brightness and, most of all-colours), it's many display formats in the zoom and with the sound, this LCD TV being a really space saver in a decent size living room. Not to mention its energy saving (less than 1 W on stand-by) and weight, around 10 kilos! A very big difference (especially when moving house) from my old 26'' Toshiba bulky box weighting 2-3 times more! I used this LCD screen so far as a TV screen, PC monitor, camcorder display and PS2 monitor and I have no complaints about it.
The quality of the picture and sound is impressive whatever the source, with a special mention when watching DVDs. It comes with all the cables, the connectivity is reasonably good but the thing I found awkward is the upside down placement of the Scart plug, which I tend to believe that is a common feature for many
LDC TV models. The technical specifications mention a viewing angle of 170 degrees that is easy to notice on horizontal plan and is probably lower on vertical one. You will also notice that the screen's anti-reflection coating is a major plus, especially in bright environments. I noticed that the optimal viewing distance is around 2.5-3 meters. Living in a low digital signal area, I experienced some reception problems reflected in the picture quality but nothing to worry about when the signal is clear. As a final conclusion, the Philips 23PF4310 LCD TV is a technological jewellery that provides a great audio-visual experience and enhances the aspect of the home at quite an affordable price.
