Photo printing and image management with your printer

Photo printing and image management with your printer

Photo printing, as pro photographers know, is a potential minefield of quality issues. The technical side of printing needs some attention to detail. This is actually pretty straightforward when you know how, but the real risk is a series of trial and error prints that just waste time, paper and ink. You can get this right before you hit "Print". You can also get very good deals on ink cartridges and laser toner for photo printing in Australia to cut down on the cost of your prints.

Setup and data issues

Depending on your camera and your printer software, you'll need to get your photos set up for high quality. The trouble is that some photo software has its own ideas about quality. Older printers can't always work with new software, either, another common problem. The name brand cameras are usually OK for all printers, but the proof is in the print, and that's where the issues usually start.

If you're having problems printing accurately, this is where they'll be. One way around this is to transfer the images to another graphics software which you know does print properly. A simple cut and paste should tell you if it's your camera or printer software which has created the problem.

Matching your settings to photo quality

The dialog box is definitely the first stop in setting up any photo print. Set for Best Photo Quality, and select Print Preview. The preview is a quality control which will show any obvious issues. In some cases it may even show a blank, which means it can't read the data, or simply not print off the camera software, meaning the same thing.

(The simple fix for a "no show" preview is to open the image with Windows Picture Viewer, Adobe Photoshop or Apple Quick Time, which are all-purpose standard print viewers, and you can print off them, whatever software you're using.)

If, however, you're getting a print preview which is OK, the print will define the quality.

Always test print

A test print need to be done before you waste good quality ink and paper. Use a basic print test of the heads and nozzles to ensure the ink feeds are working properly on plain paper. (Use the Maintenance tab on the print dialog box)

You're currently set up for a Best Photo Quality print. The test should be perfect, with solid lines on all colours. Now, test the photo on a basic print. If it comes out well on plain paper, it'll be great on photo quality paper.

Perfect match- a great photo

The big advantage of printing your own photos is that you can really go to work on photo album. You can do collages, decorative prints, even create designs for graphics with your photos. This is a lot of fun, and your printer can help you with all of it. Stock up on good printer cartridges, toner and paper, and have a ball.
