Photographer's Hidden Artillery - Canon 70-300mm Lens

Who doesn't love a great surprise? After all, they are not an every day occurrence

. So when they happen it is a time for celebration and, perhaps reflection.

The 70-300mm Canon Lens (not the DO model) has been that kind of a surprise.

Photographers love to share their success stories about gear and cameras, yet this lens has been one of the better kept secrets. You rarely hear anyone proclaiming the greatness of this little lens. Merely glancing at the lens, you get the feeling that there is nothing exceptional about it. But, when you take a closer look at the reviews and comments, and at the lens itself, you begin to see something special.

Perhaps it's because the lens is not impressive to look at, and "real" photographers want an attention-getter on the front of their prized digital SLR.

Or, since photographers take pride in how much they spend on their gear, it just may be that the price is too unimpressive.

Don't be fooled, the Canon 70-300 is not as unimpressive as you may first think. It is worthy of your attention.

When you look for impressive, the first thing that draws attention is the image quality. This should be the number one consideration for any lens. And this one is rated as good, or nearly as good, as the Canon "L" lenses.

However, that is not usually the first thing you notice on blogs or forum posts. It is actually that the lens took them by surprise because it was not that impressive. Comments like, "I thought it was a toy," express the first impressions of many first-time users.

You have heard that first impressions are lasting ones. But that is not necessarily true with this lens. They are quickly impressed after using the lens for only a few shots. The reason for the change in attitude is not only the wonderful image quality, but the addition of IS (image stabilization) and USM (ultrasonic motor). These are impressive qualities shared by the most advanced Canon lenses.

Many photographers choose to capture their images with a hand held camera. These two exceptional features make this much more of a possibility with the 70-300 lens.

I love this remark from a guy who found his 70-300 Canon lens at a garage sale. Picking it up, he figured he would buy it for a young relative who was just getting started in photography. The person running the yard sale was clueless about the lens. So there was no help there in determining the value. So, the photographer buys the lens.

Upon arriving home, he put it on his Canon 5D to see if it even worked. Took a few shots. There is a bit more to the story, but the result is that the unsuspecting relative never took possession of the lens. This photographer stated that the lens was amazing. It was just too good to give to someone with no photography experience.

Surprises are great when they come like this. Garage sales, dumpster diving, estate sales.. these can all be surprise sources of treasure.
