Photovoltaics vs solar radiance

Photovoltaic energy and Radiant energy are similar in that the ultimate source of the energy is from the sun

. That's where the similarity ends though. Each is eco-friendly and each has a specific use.

Photovoltaic energy is the harnessing of solar energy and the conversion this energy into electricity. This is done through the use of solar panels and solar inverters. Solar panels can be homemade or purchased, and even come in the form of solar roofing tiles. The solar inverters convert the collected energy into usable electric alternating current and either directs it towards immediate usage or towards storage. There are three types of solar inverters:

1. Stand-alone Inverter Stand- alone inverters are used in isolated systems such as cabins, cottages, water pump and monitoring stations. They are also used for mobile energy for boats and RVs. The stand alone inverter, like any inverter, converts DC electricity from a voltaic cell into AC electricity that our appliances need. Many stand-alone inverters also incorporate battery chargers(also a type of voltaic cell) to help replenish the battery from the AC source. These stand- alone inverters do not usually work with utility grids and are not required to have anti-islanding protection.

2. Grid-Tie Inverter - A grid-tie inverter is an electrical device that allows users to complement their grid power with solar energy. The grid-tie inverter regulates the amount of voltage and the current that is received from the DC solar panels and then converts it into an alternating current. Grid-tie inverters make sure that the power will be in phase with the grid-power. This allows for selling excess power back to the power company. In order to sell power back to the power company, however, your meter must be able to run in both directions. Grid-tie inverters do not provide power in the event of a power shortage. On the AC side, grid-tie inverters supply electricity in sinusoidal form (synchronized with the grid), and also limit feed in voltage no higher than the grid's voltage. On the DC side, the power outlet varies to find the maximum power point.

3. Battery backup solar inverter - These inverters are also connected to the utility grid, like the grid-tie inverters, but they are designed to draw the electricity from a battery and control the battery charging by means of a solar charge controller and send the excess electricity to the power grid. Because this system store the solar electricity in the battery, the solar inverter can draw DC electricity from the battery bank and still produce the AC power
