Pinterest is an exciting place to be right now

. There is a wealth of colorful images, infographics and quotes to inspire, to covet and inform. As a result, it is a good source for traffic. Interestingly, Pinterest is driving new traffic to sites, and does not appear to be eroding traffic from the search engines and other typical referring sources. It is natural, therefore, that we might all want to be on Pinterest to see if we can get ourselves some of those new eyeballs. Here are 5 tips for daily use so that you can maximize Pinterest for business use.

1. Pin Daily

It sounds obvious enough. If you pin an exciting, new image for your primary keyword phrase every day, you set the expectation that more will come at exactly the same time tomorrow. You want people to be looking for your next one - it means you are developing a following. The more followers you have the wider your audience becomes.

2. Varietal Sources


The Pinterest community does not appreciate overt self-promotion. You have to be subtle and always add value to the neighborhood. Therefore each daily image needs to not always come from your own site, but from a variety of sources. Leading people to informative articles and other resources simply reinforces your own authority in that specialty.

3. Identify The Leader

No matter how big, or how authoritative you become, there is usually at least one other entity as big or as credible a source. Rather than avoiding those people and feel insecure about it, simply follow them. Since Pinterest is a social network, more than likely that person will reciprocate and follow you back. They may not have been aware of you before and may engage in interesting conversation. Once they follow you, their followers will become aware of you and your resources too. 4. Comments

I believe that you need to comment or like at least 5 other pieces of content on a social network before you have earned the right to plant your own. When you are using Pinterest for business, a comment like "so cute!" does nothing for you; it adds nothing to the conversation and simply identifies you as an admirer not an expert. On some boards, this might be appropriate - boards about design or style - but in your own space/niche/market segment you need to add value to the conversation to demonstrate your expertise. Comments of about 200 characters long have been proven to get more re-pins than shorter comments.


5. Video

People say they love video. We are constantly being urged to offer more video on our sites. What's fun about videos pinned on Pinterest is that they then get listed in two different place - once on the board that you pinned it, and secondly under the general videos section. Not bad for one click's worth of time!
