Planning The Fishing Adventure Of A Lifetime
Are you wondering when the perfect time to go Alaska Halibut Salmon fishing is
? As you are making your decision and solidifying the plans for your fishing adventure, it may help if you knew what kind of fish you were looking to catch. Would your prize fish be a twenty to fifty pound King Salmon to bring home to the kids, or would you prefer the joy of catching Silver Salmon that are jumping out of the water to try to get free from your hook? Perhaps you are more of a peaceful, fly fishing type. You can always mix and match, too, and have a different experience each day, but there are certain times of the year that are better for some types of fish than others. Let's take a look and see what is best for you.
So, say you want nothing more than to catch a huge King Salmon. In Alaska, King Salmon can be found anywhere from seventeen to seventy pounds! You are bent on catching nothing less than a fifty pound fish. You are going to need to cater your trip to the best time for the fish. Your very best time would be mid-May to late June. You could potentially have success from late June to early July, but after that you are pretty much out of luck.
If you want the fight of the catch that you get from Silver Salmon, where the trick is not catching them but keeping them caught, your very best time to plan your trip is mid to late August. Early July and early September are decent times for Silvers. It may take you a little longer to hook one, but it is definitely possible. From May to July, this type of Salmon is pretty sparse in Alaska.
For the fly fishing lovers out there, there are more options for you. Pink Salmon for fly fishers are in heavy population from early July to mid-August. The rest of the season they are somewhat sparse. Dolly Varden can almost always be found, but they shift from salt water to fresh water in streams. Depending on when you are taking your trip, if you are interested in catching some Dolly Varden, you will need to check to see where you will have the most success.
If Halibut is your aim, the whole season is pretty good. You could catch a Halibut weighing anywhere from twenty pounds to two hundred pounds! That is a huge fish! Earlier in the season, they will be found deeper in the water, and from early July to mid-August, they can be found between one hundred and two hundred feet deep.
Once you decide on the type of experience you would like and the type of fish you want to catch, you can get your Alaska Halibut Salmon fishing adventure on its way!
