Most male homeowners like to think that someday they'll have their own man-cave. A space to call their own that becomes the perfect rec room where "no chics are allowed". The basement is often chosen, but that's such a clich? and typical choice. If you have the want for a rec room and a bit of creativity behind you, consider with general contractors to transform another location into the perfect rec room: The garage.

A finished garage is a hip way to revitalize your home and create an entertainment "addition". It's a natural choice because the architecture and framework is already in place and in many cases - so is the electricity. The cost of finishing a garage is relatively cheap depending on your overall plans for the space and in some cases can cost less than finishing your basement. Start with the Basics

If you want to finish your garage to transform it into a rec room, most general contractors would recommend starting with the outer shell - the basics. Add a drop ceiling to save on material costs. Insulate your walls and wire the space for media. Plumbing is option, but great if you want to do a little kitchen remodeling for a wet bar. Think of things that can stick around if you decide to turn the space back into a garage.

You can even go so far as to install a well-insulated sub floor in the garage. If done properly it should be able to easily support the weight of a vehicle. With a subfloor in place you can lay down any type of floor you want based on whether you'll stick with a rec room or change the space back to a garage.

A Space for Appliances

It isn't necessary to go nuts and start a big kitchen remodeling process in your garage but having a small functional kitchen space or wet bar is ideal for your rec room. It saves you or your friends and family from jogging in and out of the house just to get a drink. At the very least, considering making a small space for storing glasses with a nook for a small fridge. This can add a great deal of comfort and value to your new rec room.

Since most garage spaces are limited in size, you want to keep the floor plan open. You can stick to this design by putting the right kind of doors into your rec room. To replace the expansive garage door, use French doors that provide a lot of natural light, view and that open outward. This way they don't swing into your rec space. For other doorways, install pocket doors where you need to access the backyard or pool area.

Custom Cabinetry and Entertainment Centers

Size and space issues can also create problems when you want to start adding furniture and entertainment centers. This is doubled if you're the type that wants wetbar space and other furniture for gaming like arcade machines, a pool table or air hockey, etc. Save space by building custom cabinets that are mounted up on the wall. Avoid furniture with a footprint if you're able to do so, including entertainment centers and cabinets.

Plan smart when you're building your garage out. This makes the space multi-functional. When you work with general contractors you'll be making home improvement decisions that will ultimately add to the value of your home. The return comes back through the enjoyment of the space as well as if you ever decide to sell the property.
