Plasma Tvs: Problems And Solutions

Plasma TVs are at the forefront of television technology

. They feature 16:9 wide screen viewing areas and are only three to five inches deep. Plasmas use electrically charged neon and xenon gases to produce the images on the screen. As a result, the pictures are brighter and have a higher contrast ratio. An added bonus, plasma screens can accommodate high-motion scenes--an ability with which only the top LCD TVs can compare. Plasmas can run standard-definition DVDs, but it's high-definition movies that plasmas are really meant for. And screens with 1080p capability can display Blu-Ray to its fullest. Perhaps one of the best perks of all is that there are surprisingly few problems with plasma TVs. Burn-in and pixel distortion are the only two areas for concern, and both can be easily repaired and/or prevented.

The weakest aspect of plasmas is their susceptibility to burn-in. This happens when sports or news channels with static objects (scoreboards, news tickers, etc.) are left on for extended periods of time. Images in video games can cause similar problems, especially when the game is paused. However, burn-in is not as much of a problem as it was for first-generation TVs. All plasma screens now are equipped with screen-burn protection, and the problem has been almost virtually eradicated.

A lesser concern is the possibility of screen distortion and dead pixels. These problems can be easily corrected with a pixel corrector DVD. First, connect the plasma to an external DVD player (even if there is a DVD player built into the set). Turn the power on. From the TV's main menu, select Display Options, and put the settings on the highest resolution possible. Insert the pixel corrector DVD into the DVD player. You can either let the wizard run all of the tests at the same time or you can manually choose the repair functions you need on the main menu. Don't leave the room while the DVD runs; stay and watch the repair wizard work. This way you can observe the washes and tests to make sure everything is fixed. If a problem area is missed, rerun the repair wizard. Use the corrector DVD frequently to keep the plasma screen in top condition and to prevent problems from getting worse. If there is any physical damage on the TV, tap on the frame and above the damaged area on the screen. Continue to tap and bend until the distortions dissolve.

The huge advantages of plasma TVs far outweigh the potential problems--problems that are easily resolved--making plasma screens a terrific investment.
