With a credit card, one can make the necessary purchase or acquire services without the need to pay for them upfront. But despite all these advantages, we must never forget the risks.

Aside from being handy and easy to use, they are also known for their high interest rate charges. For example, some impose a 15% interest while others charge even more. With 15% interest rate, an item that you've originally bought for $50 instantly becomes $57. Imagine how much difference these additional interest fees can make on your charges. Your debts can double or even triple within just a few months. Yes, if one isn't careful, he or she can easily get stuck in serious debt problems because of high rate.

Apart from interest rates, credit cards are also accompanied by other fees and costs such as late penalty charge, annual fee, balance transfer cost, transaction fees, foreign conversion fees, etc. Add up all this costs to your account and you'll realize that each time you use your card, you're paying so much more than the original amount of your expenses.

This is why every card holder is advised to use their cards only for important purchases. For first time credit card holders and college students with student cards, knowing when and how to use their cards is a must. For instance, the use when dining out or when partying with friends is a very dangerous habit. If you must use your card, make sure that you can afford to pay it back on time.

If you own two or more credit cards, it is wise not to carry all your cards with you. Bring only the card that you intend to use when the situation calls for it. Be aware of the terms and conditions for that you own. Take note of your credit payment due dates. Last but not the least, take charge with the use of your card and don't let those plastics take control over you.
