Plastic Surgeons And Their Equipment
Plastic surgeons sometimes develop their own equipment and tools to fit their specialty
. In spite of developing ones that they specifically need, there are some basic ones that they still use because these serve their purpose well enough. The basic ones are usually found in operating rooms and are usually used for cosmetic surgery and other venues that cater to patients who wish to have aesthetic based procedures.
Administration and Incision
The administration of the substances that are used to deliver the anesthetic are usually facilitated using injections and syringes. Plastic surgeons can deliver small doses of local anesthetic to their patient for procedures that are minor while an anesthesiologist is necessary for larger doses used in major surgeries. The anesthesiologist calculates the necessary dosage for the individual based on the need, the age and the weight. Other factors may affect the dosage of the anesthesia and it is the prerogative of the anesthesiologist to change it. Injections and syringes are basic things that can be seen in an operating room for cosmetic surgery. They come in different sizes and gauges depending on the need of the doctor wielding them.
Scalpels to make the incisions are among the most common tools used for any invasive operation. Most of the procedures based on aesthetics use this sharp instrument to allow entry to the human body. The incisions that are made with the use of scalpels are clean and very fine due to the sharpness of the instrument. Plastic surgeons can make large or small incisions with it. There are also different kinds of scalpels or knives which are classified according to size. Closing up the incisions may make use of needles or sutures. Stitches are often used by the doctor to close up the wound, but some use sutures as well. Preference of the doctor and the necessity of the patient prevail in the decision. Needle holders are also necessary to hold the special needles that are used to stitch up the patient after the procedure.
Retractors and Forceps
These instruments are used to hold bones, tissues and skin in order to allow access to the inner part of the human body. Retractors can be used and left on their own holding up whatever it needs to hold up but forceps may have to be actually held by a nurse or other medically qualified person. Forceps are also used to grab tissues, bones and other things in the individual's body. There are many different kinds of retractors and forceps which are specifically designed for certain areas. Plastic surgeons may use specific ones for the nose, cheeks, breasts, abdomen, chest and other parts. Forceps are also commonly used in dressing, grasping and suturing. There are many different sizes and uses of both the retractors and the forceps in cosmetic surgery.
These are just a few of the more common tools and instruments that plastic surgeons use for their operations. Other common ones come in sets which are assembled for specific procedures and used specifically for these.
