Plastic Surgery: Questions Your Surgeon Should Answer

Plastic surgery is never something to be undertaken lightly and the best doctors

understand when their patients come into their consultation with a truckload of questions. Unfortunately, many patients do just the opposite. They come into the consultation with their minds abuzz with curiosity, but lack either the memory or the fortitude to ask their questions. This is no time to go silent. Nor is it necessarily a time for tact. There are important answers you need from your surgeon and some of the questions you should ask are rather pointed. Some might even see them as rude. But they aren't, and no reputable doctor should have an issue answering them.

What are your credentials?

You're looking for a few things when you ask a question like this. If you don't hear them, you can ask about them more specifically. You want to know if the doctor is licensed and whether or not he is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. If you get negative answers on either of these points, you might want to consider going somewhere else. The good news is that most board certified surgeons will make a point of telling you up front on their website, so you don't need to waste the money scheduling a consultation with those that don't.

Where will the operation be done?

You have a right to know where your plastic surgery procedure will be performed. Will it be done at the clinic you're currently at or will it be done at an offsite operating room? Some doctors have hospital privileges and choose to do their surgeries there. Hospital privileges is actually a question in and of itself. You're taking a risk if you go with a doctor who does not have them. It doesn't take much oversight or approval to open up a private practice. If a hospital has granted a doctor privileges, however, you know that he has been vetted to a degree.

What are your recommendations?

Many people schedule a consultation, go in, and begin by telling the doctor which plastic surgery procedure they would like to have. This is going about things in a somewhat backwards manner. While there's certainly nothing wrong with doing your own research, you should approach the consultation with an open mind. Many people are surprised to learn that they want a breast lift, for example, rather than implants. Or perhaps they would better benefit from Botox than from a face lift. Don't get too attached to any one procedure. Tell the doctor the problem you would like to correct and let him make his recommendations.
