Plastic Surgery Recovery Tips

For many adults, the decision to undergo plastic surgery is a life-changing one

. Virtually every person has something about his appearance that he dislikes, and almost all of us spend time at the mirror every day examining those flaws we hope nobody else notices. However, in some cases, the physical imperfection can affect how a person sees himself, and how he interacts with others. Unhappiness with a physical attribute can stand in the way of an active social life, the ability to develop healthy relationships, even affect a person's career and family life. In these instances, choosing to undergo a cosmetic procedure to correct the imperfection can make a remarkable difference in a person's quality of life.

When a patient needs any sort of surgery, cosmetic procedures included, there is always a minimal risk. A majority of plastic surgeries are performed under general anesthesia, so a client must be in good physical health before a surgeon will agree to perform any work on a patient. Another concern is recovery time; those who have health concerns, chronic illnesses, anemia, weakened immune systems, or low tolerance to pain may find the recovery process more uncomfortable and require more medical supervision. A doctor will recommend avoiding surgery if it appears a client will not be able to heal properly or may experience a difficult recovery.

For the most part, recuperation from plastic surgery is not so much difficult as it is time-consuming. Depending on what a patient has had done, she is likely to be confined to bed rest for three to seven days, and may be ordered to avoid activity for weeks after the procedure. It is common to abstain from drinking, smoking, drugs, exercise, and sexual activity for at least two weeks following surgery. Many people are required to not go to work during the first phase of recovery, and use that time to take a rest-focused vacation. Others wish to avoid being seen after undergoing rhinoplasty, face or forehead lifts, or other work that leaves visible swelling and bruising. For these clients, a trip to a spa designed to cater to those recovering from cosmetic work is often the best solution.

While plastic surgery is not an easy or painless solution by any means, both the risks and the discomforts associated with it can be easily managed in healthy adults. Following the doctor's instructions, taking pain medication, and allowing proper time for rest and recuperation are the most essential ingredients for a positive recovery from plastic surgery.
