Plastic Window Covering | Home Winterizing

The cold weather is quickly arriving in the northern areas of the country. In the past few weeks the overnight temperatures have dropped low enough for heavy white frost to appear on everything. Wood burning stoves are at work as seen from smoke coming from the chimneys. Winter hasn't arrived yet but is time to winterize your home for the cold weather that is soon to arrive.

If you don't have high energy efficient windows to keep the house warm and cozy on the inside you should consider using a window covering if you do not intend to install replacement windows. A plastic window covering is an excellent material for insulating your home against the cold and wind infiltration. Many homes in the northern areas are rather old with single pane old fashion windows. The easiest way to provide additional insulation to these windows is to overlay them with heavy plastic during the winter season.

Installing plastic window covering can save a homeowner as much as $25 a window in heating cost over the winter season. As most of these houses have ten to twelve windows the saving cost is quite substantial. The cost of installing the plastic window covering is less than $50. This is a small price to pay for keeping the house warm and saving money or your heat bill.

The installation of the plastic is quite simple. Clean the window glass first, cut the plastic to fit, apply adhesive or a tacking strip to the edge of the plastic and staple it to the window frame. Once it is in place use a hair-dryer to shrink-fit the plastic tightly across the window.

The plastic window covering will allow light into the house nearly as affectively as double glass windows. In the spring the plastic is easy to remove. This is a great DIY project if you live in an older house that has old fashion single glass windows. It will only take approximately fifteen minutes to install the plastic window covering on each window, time well spent for a comfortable warm house during the cold winter weather.
