Plumbing Courses Trainees' Recieve Jobs Boost as New Homes Bonus Begins
Councils have received government payments of up to 4m for the first year of the New Homes Bonus Scheme. This is a big boost for those on Plumbing courses and other associated courses as the encouragement by the government to create new homes increases the demand for qualified plumbers and construction Workers.
The New Homes Bonus was set up to address the local government finance system, which was unfortunataley set up to discourage growth. Up until last year, increased housing in communities has meant increased strain on public services and reduced amenities. The New Homes Bonus was therefore set up to help create a more positive attitude to growth, and create an environment in which new housing is more readily accepted.
The structure of the scheme means that for every new home built the government will match the council tax raised on each new house for a period of six years - for a band D home that would be around 1400.
Local authorities will also have control over how they spend the money, providing a further incentive to these authorities. Many councils have seen the benefits of this scheme and as such recieved large amounts from the government to create new homes in there areas.
Local Councils which received the highest funding included:
Tower Hamlets who recieved 4.29m after 2,934 homes were built, Islington council (3.7m) Birmingham (3.2m) and Leeds (2.7m).
A variety of different funds were distributed with Scarborough council receiving the smallest bonus, after just 25 homes were built in it's district.
The government intends to spend 200m on the incentive in 2011 and has allocated a further 950m to spend up to 2014.
This means that demand for people on plumbing courses is set to increase as more jobs in the housing construction sector will increase.
Housing minister Grant Shapps said: "This country needs more homes, so we need the nation to start building again but this time with the backing of local communities rather than in the teeth of their opposition. That's why we're giving communities a reason to say yes to new homes through these powerful cash incentives.
