Plyometric Pushup
Doing pushups is a great way of developing big arm muscles and a nice toned upper body. However after a while the results you get from performing pushups will start to severely diminish. This is because there is only so far you can go doing standard pushups.
To go further you need to be doing pushup variations. By this I mean you need to take the original pushup and modify it so that it is either more challenging (creates more resistance) or that it targets different muscle areas.
A great example of an exercise that enhances the common pushup is the plyometric pushup. The plyometric pushup is often called the explosive pushup and you will see why when you read my instructions on how to perform one:
First you need to take the standard pushup stance.
Now you do a normal pushup all the way down but when you get to the bottom position you are going to explode off the ground with enough power that your arms leave the ground.
Then you arms will land back on the ground and you will go down for another pushup continuing on until you have done the amount of reps you have set out to do.
It is this explosion at the bottom of the rep that is key to this exercise. This exercise is great for athletes and sports persons who need explosive power for what they do, like a defensive lines man in the nfl.
When you are in the air it is important you allow your arms to bend and cushion the impact, do not land back with your arms straightened. Always cushion the landing by going straight into another pushup.
