Popular Jobs in Lighting
Until, that is, it doesn't work. You know how annoying it can be to have a light bulb burn out when you're rushing to get ready in the morning. Imagine that annoyance on a much larger scale. What if all the lights in a hospital went out at the same time? Lives could be in danger. Now, you have a slightly better idea of just how important lighting jobs can be.
The Jobs Themselves
There are many different job titles within the lighting industry. You can choose to work as an installer, a designer, or in manufacturing or sales. We'll take a closer look at a few examples.
As an installer, you would be responsible for the installation of lighting systems in large buildings, such as hospitals, offices and schools. This involves a great deal of planning, attention to detail, and focus. If you make a mistake, depending on where in the system it is, the entire lighting system could be compromised. Lighting jobs involving installation are usually team-based jobs. A lighting contractor runs a crew of workers. Whether your role is contractor or technician, you carry a great deal of responsibility.
If you choose to work in the manufacture of lighting components, you will be dealing with very small and intricate parts of electrical equipment. While these jobs are not as mentally demanding as higher-level positions in the lighting industry, they still require a great deal of attention to detail, as well as the ability to keep your mind on the job despite long hours of repetitive work.
Lighting design can be a wonderful career if you have a creative side to your personality. You can choose to specialize in industrial lighting, which involves designing the lighting systems for large buildings. You can also make the leap into the artistic side of lighting design. Many people look to lighting as a way to decorate and personalize their homes, and if you have a flair for art and creativity, you could find yourself designing lighting systems which double as functional artwork.
In lighting jobs which deal with sales, you have several options. Working in a retail store is one option, selling to customers on a personal level. If you want to move into corporate sales, you could move up within a lighting company, eventually selling the lighting fixtures and equipment for entire buildings or corporations.
Desirable Qualities
Before looking into lighting jobs, you should first make sure that you have a strong background in math. Much of the installation, manufacture and design of lighting is based on numbers. You should also be mechanically inclined and good with your hands. A good eye for detail and a strong knowledge of how every form of lighting works are also extremely important, especially today with the increased usage of alternatives such as LED's and solar lighting.
If you think you have what it takes and you show a strong aptitude for the field, lighting jobs can provide rewarding, lifelong careers.
