Popular Music Event Attracting Hundreds Of Travellers To Africa Holidays In Cape Town Hits A Low Not
Following the recently held 13th annual Cape Town Jazz Festival
, an event which many regional and international travellers attend, prompting many to book Africa holidays in Cape Town to be a part of it, critics have almost unanimously slated one of the headline acts - Lauryn Hills performance.
Hill was brought in as a last minute replacement for U.S. soul singer Jill Scott. Ms Hill is most noted for her success as a member of the Fugees and her critically acclaimed solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with popular singles such as Doo Woop (That Thing) and Ex-Factor. Despite falling out of the public eye since her dominance in the 90s, for many, Lauryn Hill was one of the most highly anticipated acts of the event. However, by all accounts the songstress failed to live up to expectations with reports that members of the audience walked out during her performance.
One review stated: She spent a great part of her performance directing the show like a crazed conductor, turning away from the audience several times per minute to instruct her band. Also, she hardly sang, hiding behind rock-inspired remixes of the hits the audience had been dying for. Her dress sense was also off. Clad in a leather jacket and a strange, ruffled outfit, she looked nothing like the deep, conscious Hip Hop and Neo Soul artist who dominated the 90s. Honestly, she appeared high on stage and was an imposter in her own brand.
While the event has received some negative publicity tourism officials in Cape Town have other cause to celebrate as South African city is seeing signs of a growth in the popularity for travellers booking holidays in Africa. The Tourism Minster for Cape Town, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, recently announced a three per cent growth in the number of travellers who chose to spend their Africa holidays in Cape Town in 2011 when compared to 2010 figures. According to the Minister, the United Kingdom remained South Africas largest source market, while growth in markets such as the U.S., Germany, India and China also contributed to the 8.3 million holidaymakers who made their way to Cape Town last year.
Notably, there was also been a growth in the number of regional travellers taking Cape Town holidays with Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland and Botswana all proving to be key source markets. Undoubtedly, the landscape, culture, fun-filled nightlife and of course events like the Cape Town Jazz Festival are major attractions both for its regional neighbours and the international markets. Event Managers of the Cape Town Jazz Festival will surely be paying attention to the lows of this years event and hopefully the 2013 edition will provide some redemption, until then many will be left with the memory of a cringe worthy performance from the once loved and highly acclaimed Lauryn Hill.
