News stories report on disasters everyday. It is unfortunate the number of people who were unprepared and suffered greater losses because of it. Many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints have worked together to come up with various solutions and creative ways to be "more prepared". Outlined below are some basic things recommended in case of an emergency.

First of all, have a plan. Know what options are available. If your family gets separated, where can you meet? If you know your house will not provide adequate protection, where else can you go? Being an active member in your community and in your church will provide you with more options, explore them. Create plans with neighbors, extended family and people within your ward. Be willing to help out others in need, such as an elderly neighbor or disabled friend.

Have at very least a 72 hour kit. Make sure you have what it takes to survive for at least 72 hours for each member of the family. Put items such as non-perishable food, water (at least 4 liters per person), clean clothing, raincoat, emergency blanket, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, toiletries, medication, water proof matches, can opener, personal documents (place in water proof container), money (in small increments) radio and/or anything else you might need for survival in a backpack that you and your children have easy access too and can grab quickly.

However, if possible try to keep extra food storage for longer periods of time. Can fruits and vegetables when the growing season is high. Store large amounts of rice, flour and dried goods. Keep several gallons of fresh water. A generator is helpful as well, but be careful storing fuel. Try to build these items over time as acquiring it all at once can be costly.

Creating your kit and your plan can be a fun and educational activity for family home evening. If you have small children, it is good to go over the plan several times. Create a game to help retention so that it becomes second nature so if you cannot be with them in their time of need, they will know what to do and how to contact you. Talk with older children and assign them duties. Work together as a family and get ideas from your children.

Talk to others who have experienced a natural disaster to learn what they did or what they wished they would have done. Hindsight is 20/20, so ask for advice from someone who has experienced.
