Preparing For Winter
After September 23rd and the onset of fall, a noticeable change in temperature has started to occur
. The nights are growing much colder and are tempting many residences to start turning on heaters or to make a fire. While no one wants to let go on the warm summer temperatures, the cold cannot be ignored and with lower temperatures comes higher energy bills. Cranking the heaters twenty four seven is expensive by itself, and the cost can skyrocket if there are noticeable leaks and inefficiencies around the home. Here are some helpful tips for lowering that energy bill while maintaining the comfort level indoors.
Check Windows and Doors
Before the temperature drops too much, be sure to go around and feel around all of the edges of windows and doorways throughout the house. Any cold drafts that come from closed windows and doors are signs of old weather stripping that needs to be repaired. This is an easy and cheap fix and can hot air from escaping, and cold air from getting in.
Tune Up the Generator
A power outage in the summer can be an inconvenience, but in the winter a power failure can turn down right dangerous. To protect yourself from the elements you will want to make sure that your backup generator is in tip top shape so that it will actually work when you need it. Gas generators require spark plugs, carburetors, oil, and anything else that a typical gas engine would need. Also be sure to make sure your gasoline has not gone bad if it has been sitting for long periods of time.
Diesel engines may require fuel filters and the like to make sure they are in good shape as well.
Check Smoke/Monoxide Detectors
If you are going to be having a roaring fire to keep your house warm you will want to make replacing all of the smoke detector batteries a priority. You will also want to make sure that every room is equipped with a smoke detector, preferably by the main entry of the room. If you are taking care to seal up your house from leaks than carbon monoxide detectors are of vital importance. A sealed house, plus a roaring fire, will quickly rob a living space of oxygen and fill it with deadly carbon monoxide. The detectors will go off when they detect rising levels of CO and could potentially save your life.
Preparing your household for winter will greatly benefit you when the temperature gets cold. Starting now, while the temps are still warm, will allow you to work outside in comfort and you will not have to deal with the elements if something does go wrong. Be sure to check any seals around openings like windows and doors. If you do not have a
generator it is recommended to purchase a new or used generator, and if you do have one make sure it is ready to perform if need be. Adding and maintaining detectors will give you the added layer of security.
