Preparing To Charter A Bus

If you are traveling with a large group of people

, consider chartering a private bus instead of taking several cars. The obvious advantage to using a charter bus is that you can keep everyone together, and no one has to drive (a professional driver comes with the bus). You also reduce the cost of gas, the wear on your cars, and the pollution you produce. The buses are comfortable, equipped with air conditioning, reclining seats, and entertainment systems, all of which make the trip more enjoyable. Charter buses are particularly useful for business trips or company retreats, as there is ample room to work on a laptop, go over papers, or conference with a colleague while en route. If you decide you do want to find a charter bus service, follow these guidelines to ensure your trip goes smoothly.

Begin looking for a company several months in advance, so you can book the bus with plenty of time. Before you choose one, compare several businesses. Determine if they are all reputable establishments. Check their licenses and see if they are members of trade organizations. Find reviews if you can. Next, ask questions about their maintenance and safety procedures. How often do they service their buses? Will they inspect the bus before the trip? Do they have proof of their insurance policy? What training and certification does the driver have? Find out what their procedure is in the event of a breakdown or accident. You'll want to know whether or not the driver will have a cell phone (and what that number is) and how to get a hold of someone in the office. Also ask if the company uses its own buses or if it subcontracts with another company.

Of course, you'll also want information about the financial aspect. Before you compare the quotes, find out if the prices include fuel, parking and toll costs, and the driver's accommodations. How many miles are allowed per day, especially once you've arrived at your destination? Will you be charged for going over them? How much? What will you be charged if you deviate from the planned route? Add up all the extra fees, and then compare the total costs. Also find out about the cancellation policy and whether or not you'll pay a deposit or the full amount upfront.

Charter buses are great resources; taking the time to do some research beforehand will assure you enjoy their full potential.
