Preparing To Get The Right Cage For Sugar Gliders

Owning a pet is similar to planning a family

Owning a pet is similar to planning a family. You will have to consider the basic needs that will be involved as an initial part of your plan or goal. Before building a family, you would want to plan for your house, sources of food, and other important needs. When owning a pet, you would want start by planning for its housing first or preparing the location in your house where you can place it. In the case of the sugar glider, you are probably thinking of getting a cage. But there is something unique about the cage for sugar gliders.

You will be surprised about the type of cage that should be prepared for these pets. You may have imagined and planned to allot a smaller place in your house where you can put a cage for sugar gliders. But even if these animals have usual length of seven inches only, you will need to get a larger cage and allot more space in your home. This is because of their nature as dictated by their names. These animals are named as such because of their diet of sweet foods and the capability to glide through the air. Because of this, you will need to prepare a cage that has a good height and base area. The normal dimensions for a cage focus on the height which should be no less than three feet. The base can be more that two square feet but no less than one square foot. To be safe, just choose a larger cage especially if youre planning to buy more than a pair of gliders.

When planning for an adequate housing for your pet gliders, the amount of vertical space is important. These animals love to climb and jump most of the time. The only way they can glide is if they can start their jump from a higher altitude. You would want to at least imitate their natural environment in the wild so that they can be developed in their best forms. This is one of the most important considerations when planning to get a cage for sugar gliders. Aside from the height and the area of the base, you also need to make sure that the bars forming the base have good spacing which should not be more than half an inch. This is important so that your pet can move around easily.

The material for the cage is also important. While the common cages are made of wire or metal, you can place wooden nesting boxes where they can sleep. It is also possible to put pouches made of cloth. Always remember to choose a cage that is easy to clean. Also make sure that it has a well designed latch. You can never underestimate the intelligence of these pets as they can easily open a latch that is not locked properly. After preparing the cage for sugar gliders, you can now start planning on getting the pet of your choice.
